Summertime Flowers made from Goldfish Crackers and Mini Oreos

Yay, it's Summer! I love summertime and all that goes with it.  The hot summer weather - yes! Even the humid weather? Yes too.  I know that's weird but it doesn't bother me.   Eating yummy summer cool treats? Of course!

One of my other favorite things about this time of year is all the blooming flowers around.  There are so many colors and types of flowers (well when I can keep the deer we get away from these delicious delicacies).

I decided to make my own summer flowers.  These are really simple and made from Pepperidge Farms Goldfish crackers (they come in all sorts of flavors and colors now), mini Oreo cookies, and pretzel sticks.

Game of Thrones - Wolf, Dragon, and Lion Oreo Cookies

Woohoo!!! Game of Thrones is back! Season 5 starts at 9 PM EST this Sunday.  Hasn't it been like forever for the new season to come back around??!

Get ready for more blood, guts, and glory in pursuit of the Iron Thrown.  All to be ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.  Seven Hells.

I made cupcakes for the series a couple years back (find them here) so wanted to do something a little bit different this time around.  I was going to make some lemon cakes - since lemon cakes seem to be the red velvet cupcake of the show - but didn't have the ingredients around this weekend.  Instead you get some Oreo cookies decorated up as some of the animals that are the house sigils.  Think of a sigil like a Harry Potter patronus - well kinda sorta.  I used the basic method for making wolf cupcakes that's in the Hello, Cupcake book which uses marshmallows to make the snout and ears and red fruit strips for the inside of the mouth.  Instead of icing I used candy melts in various colors to add detail as I wanted to be able to pick up the cookies without them being messy.  Another great tutorial for making howling wolf cupcakes can be found here on Annie Eats.  Eyes are candy coated sunflower seeds, teeth is white candy melt.  If you plan on making them (if you are crazy like me) email or leave a comment and I can give some more specific directions.

My fav family with the worse absolute luck of all time are The Starks.  Their house sigil is a Dire Wolf - think wolf on steroids.  Each of the Stark kiddos has a dire wolf as their lifetime bud.  Well most still do anyway.

And the arch nemesis of the Stark's are the Lions of Lannister.  A family with major issues and they prove that money can't buy happiness - although it makes life way more interesting in King's Landing. They are the perfect family to hate, except for Tyrion.  One minute you hate him, the next you love him - mostly you love him.  A Lannister always pays his debts so watch out.

And I can't wait for Daenerys (aka the Mother of Dragons) and her 3 cuties to come stormin' back to King's Landing to take back to the Iron Thrown which was so rudely taken from the Targaryens.

So grab your cup of ale, wine, or mead and your fav house sigil oreo and enjoy this Sunday's season opener.

There's bound to be a shock or 2 or 3 and please George R.R. Martin - finish the last book!  Thanks for stopping by and have an AWESOME week!

Chinese New Year - Year of the Ram/Goat/Sheep Red Velvet Oreos

Chinese New Year is February 19th this year - and it's the Year of the Sheep (or depending on what you look at Year of the Goat or Ram or apparently it can be any horned mountain animal!)

Although I'm half Chinese, we really never celebrated Chinese New Year.  My mom's family came over to the US way back when China went communist and has never really looked back since.  I think it was just a little to painful to celebrate anything that reminded my grandparents of home.

But as my kids are getting older, we have been trying to get them familiar with a lot of cultures and religions.  They are 25% Chinese although you'd probably never guess it by looking at them.  They are also 25% Italian and 50% a mix of European Ukranian and some German - they are real little melting pots.

To celebrate the arrival of both Chinese New Year and these bad boys aka Red Velvet Oreos, I made some Year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram decorated Oreos.

The "head" detail is made with black melting candy wafers and some yellow candy coated sunflower seeds.  And you get some very simple ram or goat shapes - although if you look at them like my hubby did, you may ask "Why did you make demon cookie?" Thanks husband.

Do you know the story behind Chinese New Year?

According to Wikipedia, the myth is that Chinese New Year started with Nian, a mythical beast (think the Chinese New Year parade lion/dragon beast) that would come on the 1st day of New Year to eat all the villager's food and kids (yikes!).  To ward Nian off, the people put food in front of their doors at the beginning of the new year thinking that if Nian ate the food, he wouldn't attach any more people.  One villager had enough of Nian's shenanigans.  A god visited him and told him to put red paper in his house and to place firecrackers all around.  Turns out Nian was afraid of the color red so the villagers started hanging red lanterns and red spring scrolls on their windows and doors and used firecrackers to scare him away.  From then on Nian never came back to the village again.

Sounds pretty plausible to me, and why not celebrate every year with a parade and firecrackers?

Happy Chinese New Year to you! We are going to hunker down and keep warm from the brutal cold front in the Northeast. These little red velvet Oreos should help!

Summertime Fudge - Made with Sherbet Oreos

So is there a difference between winter fudge and summer fudge? Probably not, but when I saw sherbet flavored Oreos, I knew they had to go into something summery, and fudge seemed like a no brainer.  I love going into fudge shops at the beach and seeing all sorts of flavors available, and since a little goes a long way, you can try a bunch of flavors.  Or, just make your own!

Squares of fudge always make me smile, but then I thought they could be dressed up a little more.  So you also get some fudge and graham cracker ice cream cones.

I don't know which I like better!

These are those cookies that started the whole thing.  Ice Cream sherbet (or Shure, Bert!) flavored Oreos (Look they are pink and green inside, my favs!)

The fudge is simple, you'll need:

1 bag of white chocolate chips
3/4 cup of sweetened condensed milk
About 10 crushed up Oreos (pick your favorite flavor, there are so many now!)

Microwave the chips and milk until just melted (it took less than 5 minutes).  Mix, then add the crushed Oreos (save a little for the top).

Pour into a 9X9 baking pan lined with foil.  Then add more crushed Oreos on top.  Let harden.  To speed you can pop into the freezer or fridge.

Cut into squares and eat!

For the ice cream cones, cut triangle cone shapes out of graham crackers and ice cream mound shapes from the fudge.

Use melted chocolate and pipe the lines onto the cone.  While chocolate is still wet, add the fudge.  Attach a "cherry" aka jelly bean to the top with more melted chocolate.

And you get some cutie patootie ice cream cone fudge.

What's your preference? Squares or Cones?

Love love love Instagram!
This fudge is really sweet but isn't that what fudge is supposed to be? And if you freeze the fudge, you can have some summer fudge in winter! And as always, thanks for stopping by - only a couple more weeks of summer so enjoy it while you can!

superhero oreos and cupcakes....!

...so i know i do a lot of superhero stuff!....like here, and here, and here, and here.....but on a trip down to universal studios in orlando, florida i picked up this luggage tag....isn't it ridiculously cute??? so i knew i would be trying to make these into some sort of goodie eventually......

....and oreos (which is pretty much the perfect cookie) were a perfect canvas....along with some candy wafers/melts in assorted colors....just put one color on top of an oreo (to get them to adhere i just stuck a cookie sheet of them outside in the 104 degree weather we've been having on the east coast....just so they melt slightly and get rid of the chalky appearance the candy melts sometimes have right out of the bag)

....then just add the superhero detail with some more melted candy melt (add color to zip lock baggie, snip a small end, then pipe on the detail)...do one color at a time and let candy harden in between colors....super simple, these probably took me less than an hour to put together all the superhero topped oreos....

....and you can also use them as cupcake toppers...!

....some spiderman and venom cupcakes! (i totally forgot to add venom's red tongue...and that's so bothering me now that i look as these pics!)

....and you get some really cutie cute and simple superhero topped oreos and/or cupcakes...

....if you have superhero freaks living in your house (or maybe YOU are a superhero freak)....then these will totally make their/your day!

...and goodbye July and hello august! hard to believe all the back to school stuff and goodies will be popping up all over blogland soon....in fact it's already fall over at pinterest....lots of fall goodies and crafts being pinned all over the place....even some thanksgiving and christmas stuff too (pinterest is way worse than retail stores in starting to make me paranoid about getting behind on the holiday seasons!)

...as usual thanks so much for stopping by.....i'm going to go workout (woohoo! week 2 of P90X) and have a cookie as a reward!
