Heart Shape Animals - Decorated Peppermint Patty Candy

cute heart shaped animal candies

There is something about cute animals that are different but look the same that I really love!  I pin these pics all the time and decided to recreate some in candy form.

How cute are these little edible animals?
Fox, Deer, Bear, Rabbit, Koala, Giraffe, Another Bear, Tiger, and Skunk

Here's an example that I was trying to emulate:

I thought heart-shaped candies would be a really good canvas!

The heart-shaped peppermint patties are available around Valentine's Day time but you can also find them on Amazon.  Or if you can't find heart-shaped candies you could just use circles.

Sometimes I use candy melts in various colors to decorate but this time I used royal icing as I wanted the icing to be nice and flat.

Dip or paint the colors onto the chocolate.  Ears and other details can also be piped onto parchment.  Wait until they are totally dry before trying to move / add to candy.  Use a dab of royal icing to attach.

Add the cute white cheeks and other detail for animals after the base color is dry. The noses are larger black candy sprinkles.   The giraffe and koala needed larger noses so they are made with more royal icing.

The other detail is added with edible markers once all the royal icing is totally dry.

They turned out so cute!

Large black sprinkles
Edible food writer in black and pink

  • Prepare royal icing.  My fav recipe here
  • Color royal icing with food gels (see photos as a guide to colors needed)
  • Paint or dip each candy heart into colors.  Let dry for about 30 mins or more if needed.

  • Add giraffe spots and skunk streak (you can add before the base coat is dry)
  • Attach royal icing detail with a dab of royal icing
  • Pipe white cheeks onto each heart and let dry.
  • Add eyes and pink rosiness to cheeks with an edible marker.

Rainbow Babka Bread

Rainbow Babka Bread

Back on the bread kick! Specifically babka bread which I became a bit obsessed with making during quarantine. There's something about this yeasty swirled bread that I love.

 Rainbow Babka Bread

The recipe is a really easy one for babka using flour, oil, quick rising yeast, vanilla, egg, honey and then food colorants/gels for the rainbow colors.

Rainbow Babka Bread

Once the dough comes together divide it into 6 equal pieces (or however many colors you want to use)

Rainbow Babka Bread

Mix by kneading until color is incorporated and let rise for 30-40 minutes or until doubled in size.

Rainbow Babka Bread

Roll all the dough out together into a rectangle shape - about 9X14 or so

Rainbow Babka Bread

I used a white chocolate spread and some crumbled graham crackers for the filling but you can use whatever you like.  Chocolate or Nutella would be great too.  Roll up from the longer end then cut all the way down the center for 2 smaller long "strands"

Rainbow Babka Bread

Wrap the "strands" around each other for that babka bread swirl.  There are lots of YouTube videos that have great tutorials too.  Let proof for another 30-40 minutes.

Fun inside and outside!

Rainbow Babka Bread

Baking babka bread is so relaxing to me for some reason - it must the kneading and then swirling of it! Make anything rainbow and that makes me even happier!

I also made another rainbow babka bread previously but made the filling rainbow instead of the dough.

Rainbow swirled babka bread

This was a fun filling for sure!

The Book of Boba Fett Character Cookies

So if you ever wondered what happened to Star War's Boba Fett after he fell into the Sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi - wonder no more!  Disney+ is now streaming The Book of Boba with all your questions answered - I think!

To celebrate one of the most famous bounty hunters, I had to make some cookies.  This is my most fav no spread sugar cookie recipe from In Katrina's Kitchen.  It works great every time I make character cookies.  I used a combination of natural food colors and also food gels for tinting.

Then just use it like play-do to make The Book of Boba characters.  I used google pics as a guide.

Book of Boba Fett Cookies

These are pre-baked cookies.  No need to chill the dough.

And after baking for about 8-10 minutes.  Watch the cookies closely so they don't brown too much.

So far the live action series is great and brings back some old favs as well as some new characters.  I included here Boba Fett (of course!), Fennac Shand (his partner in crime/confidant/hired assassin), one of the Tusken Raiders (who seem to play a big part in Boba's arc), a Gamorrean guard, Max Rebo (still jamming on his keyboard), the Wookie Krrsantan, 8D8 Droid, and my new favs The Hutt Twins!

We can't wait to see how they wrap it up and what's in store for our fav Boba.

Happy Chinese New Year - Year of the Tiger Mini Cakes

Chinese New Year Tiger Cupcakes

Happy 2022!

I know it's been 2022 for almost a month, but life keeps getting in the way and the posts are suffering.  Sorry!

But I'm trying to get back into posting for the blog - because I really do enjoy it.  So first up for this year are some mini cakes for Chinese New Year.

2022 has got to be a better year for all, I mean it's the Year of the Tiger!!

The cute little tiger toppers are made from white chocolate fudge dipped mini Oreos.  I melted some orange candy melt (well I didn't have orange so went old school art class and melted yellow with a little red).

Paint on the orange to cover the Oreo

Then paint on melted black candy melts for the stripes.  Use the orange and make some tiny tiger ears.

The nose is a cute heart sprinkle colored black with an edible food writer.  Ears are attached with more of the orange candy melt with a little white added for detail. Face detail is more melted black candy melt drawn on with a toothpick.

Chinese New Year Tiger Cupcakes

I botched a chocolate bundt cake as it wouldn't release from the pan (boo!) but I used the cake to cut out mini cakes for this project and the rest I'm saving for cake pops!

Add some buttercream frosting that I then sprayed red with some Wilton's color spray

I also added some gold color spray at the end to make it more Chinese New Year colors

Super cute mini tiger cakes for the Chinese Lunar New Year were gobbled up already!

Happy 2022 to all!
